In 1973, a 15-year-old girl living on an 80-acre farm in the Ozarks region of northwest Arkansas had an unexpected encounter while performing an evening chore. As dusk set in, she stepped outside to check on her chicken house and came face to face with a large, red-haired creature standing approximately eight feet tall. The girl described the being as strikingly unusual, noting its immense size and distinctive hair color. This sighting took place on the family farm where the girl resided, marking a rare and memorable experience with an alleged cryptid.
The encounter stood out due to the creature’s height and vivid red hair, details that differ from many other Bigfoot reports which typically describe darker-haired beings. The girl’s close proximity to the creature, and the clear outline of its features and stature, added to the credibility of her account. She did not report any aggression from the creature, merely noting its unexpected presence during an otherwise routine moment. Such firsthand encounters, especially from rural areas like the Ozarks, contribute to ongoing interest and study in Bigfoot phenomena. The region itself has not been widely noted for frequent sightings, making this particular 1973 report a notable example within the broader context of cryptid lore in the United States. Reports like this reflect a long-standing cultural fascination with elusive forest beings and highlight the mix of folklore and personal testimony that drives interest in these mysterious creatures worldwide.
NOTE: This account is first hand and was told directly to Lon Strickler of Phantoms and Monsters in 1983, he recently rediscovered it on a cassette recording in his field archive- one of many hundreds of interviews Lon has conducted with with experiencers of cryptid and paranormal encounters duringhis travels throughout the United States and Canada in the 1970s & 1980s.
