On January 15, 1989, a witness in Kulnura, New South Wales, reported observing and photographing two dark disc-shaped objects emerging from a circular electrical storm portal in the sky. The witness described a unique electrical phenomenon involving controlled bolts of electricity within a defined circular hole in the clouds, accompanied by an unusual sound described as if tearing a sheet of metal. After retrieving a camera, the witness took a photograph capturing the two objects appearing swiftly before the electrical activity ceased. The image remained private for 36 years before the witness chose to share the experience in March 2025.
The case was investigated by Elaine Wartha Motta under the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON). Forensic photographic analysis using specialized tools confirmed the presence of two structured, disc-shaped objects with sharp outlines and no evidence of digital manipulation. Environmental data verified electrical storm conditions consistent with the witness report, and conventional explanations such as birds, drones, or reflections were systematically excluded. The investigation concluded with a high confidence level (≥90%) that the objects remained unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP), supporting a substantial evidence classification.
This case is significant as it highlights a well-documented and historic UAP sighting supported by photographic and meteorological evidence, setting it apart from anecdotal reports. It underscores the challenges in explaining certain atmospheric and aerial phenomena and contributes to ongoing efforts within scientific and investigative communities to analyze credible UFO encounters. The case’s preservation and eventual disclosure illustrate evolving social attitudes toward UAP phenomena and the importance of rigorous, multidisciplinary investigation in building a comprehensive understanding of such events.
