Retired U.S. Air Force Colonel Fred Claussen has shared his account of a 1980 UFO encounter during which he observed a football-shaped, glowing craft over the North Sea. Claussen, a decorated Vietnam combat pilot, described being scrambled at 3 AM to intercept the object with his F-15, which accelerated to Mach 3 before vanishing. After visually tracking the craft and recording about 15 seconds of gun camera footage, Claussen returned to base where his film was confiscated. He did not speak publicly about the incident until after his retirement and later spoke at a National Press Club event discussing notable UFO cases, including the Varginha Brazil incident.
This revelation coincides with the release of authenticated MQ-9 Reaper drone footage displaying a UAP exhibiting rapid acceleration near the Jordan-Syria border, which investigative journalists have brought to light. When inquiries about this and other videos were made to the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO), the Pentagon’s current UFO investigative body, they declined to comment. Criticism has emerged from former officials and whistleblowers alleging that AARO may be restricting access to UFO data and footage before it can be widely analyzed, raising questions about transparency and the handling of UAP investigations within the defense community.
