Nikola Tesla, renowned inventor and electrical engineer, is widely credited with pioneering numerous technologies such as radio, the Tesla Coil, and alternating current electricity. However, less mainstream but intriguing claims suggest Tesla also studied antigravity and advanced propulsion systems decades before modern aerospace concepts emerged. In 1928, Tesla patented a flying machine featuring a hybrid of helicopter and aeroplane elements, accompanied by plans for what he termed a “SPACE DRIVE,” an anti-electromagnetic field propulsion mechanism. Further, in a 1938 lecture on May 12, Tesla outlined a Dynamic Theory of Gravity that purportedly replaced Einstein’s space-time curvature with a force field involving the ether, a concept long dismissed by orthodox physics. Tesla also claimed discovery of “Environmental Energy,” a process positing that matter’s energy comes solely from the surrounding environment, directly contradicting Einstein’s famous equation, E = mc².
Documentary evidence for these ideas remains sparse due to classified government holdings. William R. Lyne, author of “Occult Ether Physics,” accessed limited materials on Tesla’s late-life theories and found that official archives, including those at the Robert J. Oppenheimer Research Center, denied him access citing national security restrictions. Tesla’s poetic description of the ether involved microscopic vortices converting ether into ponderable matter and back, allowing the creation and manipulation of matter, control over Earth’s physical attributes, seasons, and trajectory through space. He proposed harnessing these processes for free energy and gravitational control, a goal that aligns with descriptions in UFO reports of vehicles utilising electrostatic and electromagnetic principles. These craft reportedly employ Tesla Coil-like mechanisms within a disc-shaped framework generating high-frequency electrostatic fields, consistent with Tesla’s findings on the Faraday effect and surface electrical charge concentration.

Tesla’s assertions came at a time when the ether a luminiferous medium once thought necessary for light propagation had been discredited by Einstein’s theories, yet Tesla argued its indispensability in explaining inertia, gravity, and universal motion. His concept of “electropulsation” suggested utilising electromagnetic oscillations to counteract gravity and perform work more efficiently. Modern Ufology frequently cites Tesla’s work as a potential foundation for understanding reported “anti-gravity” propulsion systems in unidentified flying objects (UFOs/IFO), particularly as these crafts exhibit features aligning with Tesla’s patents and theories. The secrecy surrounding Tesla’s papers and continued government classification raises further questions about the developmental state of these technologies and their potential impact on aerospace engineering and fundamental physics. While many of Tesla’s ideas remain unverified, their coherence and connection to unexplained aerial phenomena endorse ongoing scholarly and investigative interest in his legacy within the context of Fortean studies and advanced propulsion research.
